Flood-control System along Yangtze River to be Stepped up

The pace of building up a comprehensive flood-control system along Yangtze River will be quickened, according to senior water conservancy officials and experts attending a meeting Tuesday to discuss measures against possible floods from Shanghai and seven provinces along the river.

The improved system will pay attention to water storing-up and drainaging with the later put in the first place, making it possible for the trunk streams of the Yangtze River to have a high water level, said Li Antian, executive deputy general commander of the Yangtze River Flood Control General Headquarters.

The system includes three major parts, namely as embankment reinforcement, the Three Gorges project and the building up of reservoirs, flood water-storing areas and watercourse rectification.

As the Three Gorges project operates in 2009, it can store 22.15 billion cubic metres of floodwater and will efficiently control extraordinarily serious flood like the one in 1870.
