China Train Line to Run Faster

Train speeds on the railway between Xiaoshan and Ningbo, two cities in east China's Zhejiang Province, will be increased to 80 km per hour from the present 45 km per hour as of June 1.

The program is part of China's massive effort to raise the speed of trains across the country to meet the needs of the national economy and sharpen the competitive edge of railways, said a local transportation official.

The Xiaoshan-Ningbo railway is part of a major railway line from Ningbo to Shanghai, China's largest commercial center.

According to the official, beginning June 1, it will take passenger trains only four and a half hours, about one hour less than now, to travel from Shanghai to Ningbo.

On October 1, the speed of this line's trains will increase to 110 km per hour, he added.
