Water Quality Improves in Dongting Lake

The quality of water in the Dongting Lake, in central China's Hunan Province, has been improving, according to a local water inspection team.

The inspection team organized by the Hunan Provincial Government, also inspected enterprises along the lake to ensure that they are reducing pollutants according to state regulations.

Situated at the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, the Dongting Lake is China's second largest fresh-water lake. With an water area of 2,700 sq km, Dongting Lake is also one of the most important wetlands in Asia. Every year, more than 10 million birds migrate to the Lake during winter.

The Central Chinese Government has initiated an environment protection campaign by introducing a range of measures to clean up pollution in Dongting Lake.

Manufacturing businesses are required to treat industrial wastewater before discharging. Many enterprises around the Dongting Lake, for instance, have spent more in purchasing advanced environmental protection equipment.

The city of Yueyang has used Japanese loans to construct the first urban sewage treatment plant.

The main part of the plant has been completed. The plant, with a daily treatment capacity of 100,000 tons of sewage, will be ready for trial operation later in the year.
