Chengdu to build high-tech center

Chengdu, a big city in western China, has pledged to build a modern high-tech center in 10 years to follow the world developments.

The center is just one item on the city's 10-year development plan unveiled at the on-going Fifth Meeting of the Ninth City Committee of the Communist Party of China.

"Chengdu will place emphasis on the development of electronic information, biology, new materials and integration of optics and machinery," said Chengdu Mayor Wang Rongxuan.

By 2005, the output value of high-tech products is expected to make up a quarter of the city's gross domestic product. And the export of high-tech products will account for one-fifth, he added.
