Hotels Urged to Move out of Zhangjiajie Scenic Resort
Hotels and local residents will be moved out of the world famous scenic resort of Zhangjiajie in central China's Hunan Province within five years, under the advice of the United Nations World Heritage Center.
The project aims to reduce mounting pollution at Zhangjiajie which was listed as UNESCO site in 1992. It will cost some 300 million yuan (US$36 million).
In addition to the relocation of 9,000 local residents, numerous hotels and restaurants will be demolished.
Last year, Zhangjiajie earned one billion yuan (US$120 million) in tourism. Some 2.8 million tourists visited Zhangjiajie including 151,000 overseas visitors.
However, bustling tourism has produced serious pollution. At the Jinbianxi scenic spot, which is dubbed as "the most beautiful canyon", a number of restaurants emerging in recent years discharge 1,500 tons of sewage daily.
A relocation headquarters has open in Jinbianxi to carry out the clean-out project.
