China to Resettle Police-rescued Abducted Women and Children
Police units across China will help resettle women and children they have rescued, a notice issued by the Ministry of Public Security says.
"The work of resettlement can cap the achievement of the nationwide crackdown on traffickers of women and children, which kicked off on April 1st," the notice reads.
China began its current "hukou" system, or the permanent residence registration system, in the late 1950s, as a way to ensure the accurate and timely control of the country's population information.
According to the notice, police departments will help regain the residence rights of those rescued women and children whose registration certificates had been revoked after their disappearance.
The notice stipulates that police should also respect the wishes of the newly-freed abducted women if they choose to marry in accordance with Chinese law with their "husbands" who had previously bought their wives illicitly, and help those women to find new homes.
