Li Peng on International Situation, China's Domestic Policies

It's the views of the Chinese people that the people of a country will decide what system the country will set up and what path the country will take, Li Peng, Chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress ( NPC), said Monday.

In an interview with President of the Ukrainian TV "New Channel," Aleksander Tkachenko, the top Chinese legislator elaborated on the international situation and China's domestic polices.

The situation of the world is a focus of discussion of the international community at present, he said.

In reply to a question raised by Tkachenko that there is a prediction that China and the United States will become the two polars of the world in the future, Li said he doesn't agree with this point of view, as such a prediction goes against the reality as well as the trends of development of the world.

China has always welcomed multipolarity and does not favor a bipolar world or a unipolar world, since multipolarity is beneficial to world peace and development, he noted.

Li pointed out that China is still a developing country with a population of 1.25 billion and a weak economic foundation and will have to make long-term persisting efforts to build the country into a moderately developed country in the mid-21st century.

Politically, China is opposed to hegemonism and is not after hegemonism, and will never practice hegemonism even after it becomes powerful, he said.

Li said that some people deliberately exaggerate the strength of China and spread the allegation of so-called "China threat."

Actually, these people do not wish China to become powerful, and their assertion that China will become one of the world's two polars is similar to the formulation of "China threat."

On China's domestic policies, Li said China's policies of making economic development its central task, adopting reform and open-up, practicing socialist market economy and ruling the country by law are all summation of the people's practical experience and embody the fundamental interests of the people.

He added that China has found the road of building socialism with Chinese characteristics and practice has proved that China has embarked on the right path.

Li arrived Sunday for a three-day official goodwill visit to Ukraine, the last leg of his six-nation tour. He has already visited Yugoslavia, Slovenia, Croatia, Slovakia and Azerbaijan.
