HK Presents Q Decals As Guide for Good Service

The Quality Tourism Services (QTS) Scheme Council of Hong Kong began to present decals marking quality tourism services to the qualified businesses Tuesday.

The decals, in the shape of a block English letter Q, with a Chinese character meaning good in it, were stuck on the doors or windows of those qualified retail outlets and restaurants to give customers a clear indication of the service quality.

The QTS Scheme Council, composed of government officials and other prominent figures from tourism-related sectors, began receiving applications from retailers and restaurants for the decals in January this year.

To date, more than 200 retail shops and restaurants, representing some 1,000 outlets, have been qualified and been awarded the QTS decals.

Organizations applying to join the scheme must first undertake a self-assessment of their existing service standards against the prescribed criteria. This is followed by a professional assessment by technical consultants from the Hong Kong Productivity Council.

Only those organizations that meet all relevant requirements are awarded the QTS decals.

Frank Lee, chairman of the Association of Better Business & Tourism Services that has been appointed to administer the scheme, said the association will send mysterious shoppers to and conduct annual review on the businesses granted the decals so that their service quality will stay good.

"Apart from reinforcing consumer confidence, the QTS scheme encourages local retailers and restaurateurs to actively improve their services, which is conducive to the image of our service sector and the competitiveness of the tourism industry," said Henry Tang, the QTS Council chairman.
