Thai Prime Minister Hails Relations With China

Thai Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai Saturday hailed the Sino-Thai friendship and cooperation on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

"The cordial and friendly relations between our two countries have strengthened significantly over the past 25 years," Chuan said in a congratulatory message to his Chinese counterpart Zhu Rongji.

"Sino-Thai relations have contributed not only to the prosperity of the peoples of Thailand and the People's Republic of China, but also to peace, stability and prosperity in the region," he said.

Chuan added that the success of Chinese President Jiang Zemin's visit to Thailand last year helped to bring the two peoples even closer and marked another milestone in bilateral ties.

He also said the forthcoming official visit by Thai Queen Sirikit Kitiyakorn to China in October will further enhance and strengthen the bonds between the two nations.

Thai Foreign Minister Surin Pitsuwan also sent a congratulatory message to Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan, saying that Sino- Thai relations have evolved and developed into highly cooperative and successful relations over the past 25 years.

"I am confident that the new millennium will be an era of greater friendship and cooperation between Thailand and China as we join hands in implementing the Sino-Thai Plan of Action for the 21st Century," said Surin.

"I am also convinced that our existing cordial ties will continue to grow form strength to strength for our mutual benefit and prosperity," he added.

Thailand and China established diplomatic relations on July 1, 1975.
