Scientists Awarded for Human Genome Research

The Genetics Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Monday awarded scientists and researchers who have contributed to the completion of the working draft of the Human Genome Project.

Professor Yang Huanming, chief scientist of the human genome project in China, Zhang Meng, a researcher with the Beijing Genomics Institute and other scientists and research groups were awarded at a ceremony held in Beijing today.

The United States, Britain, Japan, France, Germany and China announced on June 26 that they have completed the working draft of human genome sequence.

As the only developing country which took part in the project, China successfully completed one percent of the human genome sequencing in April.

Through participating the project, China has built up a whole set of techniques for the genome sequencing on large scale and trained a group of researchers in this field, which makes the country's genome sequencing capacity to rank fourth in the world.
