Gas Pipeline from Sichuan to Chongqing to be Built

A 703-km-long gas pipeline extending from gas production base in southwest China's Sichuan province to central China's Hubei province will start construction before the end of this year and is expected to be completed by early 2003.

According to the China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC), the gas pipeline is part of the country's huge project of sending gas from west to east. The main part of the pipeline starts at Zhongxian City in Chongqing, the largest metropolis in southwest China, and ends in Wuhan, capital of Hubei province, with an investment totaling 2.9 billion yuan.

And construction of infrastructure and supporting facilities related to the pipeline project requires a total investment of 7 billion yuan, the CNPC source said.

Hubei province, the gas user, has worked out an initial plan to develop eight chemical projects by utilizing the gas, with total investment estimated at 17 billion yuan. The gas to be used by the eight chemical projects is expected to hit 2.75 billion cubic meters annually.
