Bashar al-Assad Elected President of Syria

Bashar al-Assad has been elected president of Syria with 97.99 percent of the votes in a nationwide referendum, Interior Minister Mohammad Harba announced Tuesday.

Bashar Assad is expected to be inaugurated on July 17 to succeed his father Hafez al-Assad who died of a heart attack on June 10.

Bashar is the only candidate in a referendum held on Monday.
