China Urges US to Abandon NMD Plan: FM Spokesman

China urges the United States to abandon the National Missile Defense (NMD) system plan at an earliest time, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Sun Yuxi said in Beijing Tuesday.

Sun was responding to a question about the failure of missile defense system tests conducted by the US recently.

He said the US development of the NMD system will break the global strategic equilibrium and stability, hinder the nuclear disarmament process, spoil the efforts of the international community on non-proliferation and may trigger off another round of arms race.

"This is against the interests of all nations across the world, including the US itself," he stressed. "We reiterate that on the NMD issue, the US faces not only technical obstacles, but more importantly, objections from the international community."

"We therefore urge the US to abandon the plan, which is harmful both to itself and others, at an earliest time."

In addition, Sun said China will, in accordance with the changes of the international situation, decide on its own to guarantee its national security against any harm.
