Beijing to Become China's Major Software Hub

The Chinese capital Beijing is determined to become the country's top software development and production base in three years, vice-mayor Lin Wenyi has said. In its recently finished plan for the Zhongguancun Science Park in the northwest, the city has included the design for a software park in the Haidian District.

The vice-mayor said Beijing has strong advantages in technologies and talents that are essential for the development of the software industry.

In fact, Beijing's income from software products and services already accounts for one-third of the national total, Lin said. To promote the development of the software industry, the city authority cut the value-added tax rate for the sector from 17 percent to six percent last year.

Lin said Beijing will co-operate with foreign companies in setting up a software designers' training center and a special fund for the support of medium and small-sized software enterprises.

She noted that the city has already formed an information technology promotion center and will draft still more policies to support the development of the software industry.
