Chinese Youngsters' Environmental Protection Project Launched

A project calling for youngsters to participate in environmental protection, sponsored by a dozen of Beijing-based organizations including the Ministry of Education and the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China was officially launched Wednesday.

Xu Jialu, vice-chariman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and Sun Fuling, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, attended the starting-up ceremony of the project. The theme of the project is to uphold sustainable development and protect environment.

The project calls for youngsters across the country to understand the sustainable development strategy and plant trees, in a bid to enhance public awareness about environmental protection.

The sponsors of the project have set up two bases for the project, one is in Xuanhua County of Hebei Province, where the Three-North Shelterbelt runs through, the other is in the Yangling Hi-Tech Agricultural Demonstration Zone in Shaanxi Province, where a sapling breeding base has been built.

In recent years, environmental protection has become a hot issue of Chinese.

Apart from the efforts made by governments at various levels, non-governmental efforts are also playing an important role in enhancing the public awareness about environment protection. For instance, the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China recently called the youth to donate money for tree- planting projects along the Yellow River.
