Desert Highway Motors On

Construction of the Yulin-Jingbian Expressway, the first high-class road ever to be built in a desert in China, was officially started on Tuesday in Yulin, in Shaanxi Province, Northwest China.

The road, which will cost 1.76 billion yuan (US$212 million) to build, will link Yulin, a northern Shaanxi city rich in coal, and Jingbian, a county with plenty of natural gas, with the province's capital Xi'an, according to the construction plan.

Xu Zengchang, manager of the road builder Yujing Expressway Construction Company Ltd, said 70 kilometres of the 134-kilometre road will pass through the Mu Us Desert.

The highway is due to be completed by September 2003. It will provide hints for building future highways in deserts.
