Vice-President Hu Calls for Closer Int'l Cooperation on Drug Suppression

Visiting Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao called for strengthening cooperation on suppression of illegal drugs at regional and international levels Thursday.

He made the call during his separate meetings with Thai crown prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, Thai Parliament President Bhichai Rattakul, President of Privy Council Prem Tinsulanonda, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces Mongkon Ampornpisit, Deputy Prime Minister Korn Dabbaransi, also leader of the ruling coalition Chart Pattana Party, and Taksin Shinawatra, leader of the opposition Tai Rak Tai Party.

"Production and selling of illegal drugs are transnational crimes, so we need regional and international cooperation to thoroughly solve the drug problem," Hu said.

"Knowing that illegal drugs have become a global problem and a common enemy of the whole mankind, the Chinese government has shown a firm and clear attitude in suppressing illegal drugs,"he said.

The Chinese vice-president noted that during recent years, the Chinese legislative and judicial authorities have taken firm and effective measures to prevent the spread of illegal drugs.

"China is willing to play an active role under an international framework of drug suppression," he stated.

He also stressed that each country should be allowed to make its own decision on how to deal with the drug problem.

Many countries in the region have already made remarkable progresses in prohibiting illegal drugs, he added.
