Britain Announces New Sanctions Against Fiji

Britain has announced new sanctions against Fiji following its recent political crisis.

Foreign Minister John Battle says all foreign office financial assistance to Fiji's government will be cancelled. And planned Navy visits and joint military exercises have also been scrapped.

Stressing the importance of an early return to full democracy, the minister says exports of arms and security equipment to Fiji will also be stopped.

The islands's hostage drama ended last week with a deal which saw cabinet roles for rebel leader George Speight and several of his supporters but none for anyone from the ethnic Indians.

Battle says Britain's also urging EU partners to impose restrictions on travel by George Speight and his associates.
