China to Hold Int'l Olympiad in Informatics

International Olympiad in Informatics 2000 (IOI2000) will take place in Beijing from September 23 to 30 this year, according to the China Association for Science and Technology.

IOI2000 will be the first Olympiad competition in computers in Asia in its 12-year history. Delegations from 70 countries and regions have signed up in the match, setting a new record of participants.

The successful popularization of elementary education, especially in computers, earned China the title of host, said Wu Wenhu, president of the science committee of IOI2000 and also a professor from China's prestigious Qinghua University.

IOI200 has been authorized by the State Council, and will be held by the Chinese Ministry of Education, the China Association for Science and Technology, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the Beijing Municipality and the China Computer Federation.

Zhou Guangzhao, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, will act as honorary chairman of IOI200 and Chen Zhili, minister of education, will be the chairman.

Led by Dr. Deng Junhui from Qinghua University, eight Chinese middle school students will attend the competition.

Initiated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in 1988, the goals of IOI are to stimulate students' interest in computer science and information technology, to bring together exceptionally talented students from various countries and share scientific and cultural knowledge.

China participated in the first IOI hosted by Bulgaria in 1989. Up till now, China has won 23 gold medals, 11 silver and nine bronze medals.
