Police Called On to Keep Order in Poor Areas

The Ministry of Public Security has ordered local police to see to it that social order is maintained so that the government's strategy to develop the economically-backward western region will go smoothly.

The ministry recently issued a circular urging local public security departments to come up with ways to meet the new policing demands that will most likely arise, especially transnational crime and misuse of funds.

It also asks all police departments to concentrate on combating pornography, drug-related crimes, gambling, and activities detrimental to the local infrastructure and environment.

The residential registration system in these areas should be reformed comprehensively, which will help attract people to work in the underdeveloped areas, it says.

The circular also urges to enhance the management of customs entry and exit to better facilitate overseas investors.

The traffic administration and fire control departments should also play their part in ensuring safety of the local people, the circular says.
