China Has 16.9 Million Internet Users

According to the newest statistics by the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) released today, China had 16.9 million Internet users and 6.5 million computers logged on to the Internet on June 30, 2000.

Of the 16.9 million Chinese Internet users, 2.58 million used an ISDN line to log on to the Intenet while 11.76 used a modem and 2.56 million used both an ISDN and modem simultaneously. 590,000 users used devices other than computers (i.e. mobile phones, WebTV) to go online. There were 99,374 domain names registered with a ".cn" ending receiving 27,289 hits. China's total international broadband width was 1234M.

The "China Internet Development and Statistics Report", which publishes the above statistics, is an important record of the development of China's Internet. The CNNIC first released the report in November 1997 and since 1998, has released a new report every six months.

The report is composed of three parts: the overall development of China's Internet, the results of Internet user surveys and how China's Internet has developed in recent years. Its main contents include: statistics of the number of China's computers logged on to the Internet, the number of Internet users, number of domain name registrations, the broadband statistics of China's Internet and hits recorded on websites.
