Bright Prospect for Asian-Pacific Space Cooperation

Luo Ge, head of Foreign Affairs Office of the State Aerospace Bureau, said there are great opportunities for Asian-Pacific space technology cooperation, which will exert great impact on their national economy and space technology.

"Space technology no longer belongs to European and American countries. Developing countries in the Asian-Pacific region are catching up as well," said Luo.

Since the first multilateral meeting on space technology in Beijing in 1992, another twenty countries and regions have attended six space technology seminars.

Cooperative programs cover small satellite technology, natural disaster prevention satellite systems and telecom satellite research and application. A program named "multi-functional small satellite" involving seven member states is now underway.

Many countries have responded with great enthusiasm in the last eight years. Breakthroughs have also been made in the last three or four years.

Meanwhile, the Asian Space Bureau will be set up. The United Nations has entrusted China with the task of establishing a Asia- Pacific aerospace training center.
