Saudi Arabia Warns Israel Against Unilateral Action on Jerusalem

Saudi Arabia stressed Monday that Israel should refrain from taking any unilateral measures aimed to change the situation of Jerusalem.

Briefing the Saudi News Agency after a cabinet meeting in the Saudi Red Sea port city of Jeddah, Saudi Information Minister Fuad Bin Abdel-Salam Faresi said Riyadh is following up the latest developments of the Middle East peace process in the wake of the collapsed Camp David talks between Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak.

Jerusalem is the core of the problem and disagreement in the Middle East, he said, adding that the Arab East Jerusalem, which Israel seized in 1967, should be handled within the United Nations resolutions 242 and 338 as part of the occupied Palestinian territories.

Saudi Arabia appealed that the Arab and Islamic countries adopt a firm stand with regard to the issue of Jerusalem, the Saudi minister said.
