Taiwan Investment Increases in Shanghai

It is learned from the "First Half Year of 2000 News Briefing" held recently by Shanghai People's Government Taiwan Affairs Office that more than 80 percent of Taiwan-funded enterprises in Shanghai are running well. After several years of examination of the investment environment and the market in Shanghai, many Taiwan-funded enterprises have seen the bright prospect for developing their business on the bank of the Huangpu River and vigorously increased their investment for expanded reproduction

Sources say that by the end of June this year, there had been a total of 3,722 Taiwan-funded projects set up in Shanghai with a contractual value of US$ 4 billion of Taiwan investment. Most Taiwan-funded enterprises, operating in accordance with economic law, have entered the harvest period one after another. Many of them have increased investment and enlarged their scale of operation.

Minhang District, located in the best belt of the combination of urban and rural areas, presently boasts 371 Taiwan-funded enterprises. Qibaozhen Town alone has owned over 100 such enterprises. Statistics show that one-sixth of the Taiwan-funded enterprises have successively increased their investment in the district, and the number is growing year after year. In 1998, there were 20 Taiwan-funded enterprises which added investment with a total amount of US$ 32 million. In 1999, 24 enterprises increased investment totaling US$ 76 million. In the first half of this year, another 23 enterprises added funds to a total value of US$ 22.03 million.

Qingpu, situated in the west of Shanghai, has abundant tourism resources. Located close to Hongqiao Airport, it enjoys convenient transportation. Qingpu district government Taiwan Affairs Office disclosed that there are eight Taiwan-funded enterprises each with an investment exceeding US$ 10 million, and the number is surging quickly.

Besides, it is quite common that Taiwan-funded enterprises in Jiading, Songjiang, Jinshan, Baoshan have generally increased their investment. Many of the Taiwan-funded enterprises established their subsidiaries. Some expanded their business to other districts, some set up investment headquarters.
