Yunnan Province Aids Needy College Students

Nearly 20,000 needy college students in Yunnan province have received aids from the province with none of them found drop out or stop studying halfway due to family poverty.

Yunnan province sees a high rate of needy college students. There are a total of 24,513 poverty-stricken students whose family income is under 80 or somewhere between 80 to 100 yuan a month, accounting for 34.74% of the total 70,000 college students on campus of the province.

Starting from 1996, the provincial government has put by allocation 20 million yuan in Yunnan Trust Investment Company as deposit principal to aid those needy students by making use of the interest. So far, the capital has amassed to 35 million yuan. Linghu'an, Party secretary and other leaders of the province also empty their own purses for offering monthly subsidies to those students with people of all walks of life following suit very enthusiastically.

Measures have been taken in many colleges and universities to afford scholarship and loans to the needy students, and help them finish their study by offering economic aid, reducing or subsidizing tuition fees. Yunnan University provides an annual loan of 250,000 yuan to students, of whom 70 percent have got the support. Students are organized to take part in part-time work while studying. Kunming University of Science and Technology has provided 500 such odd jobs for students.
