Top Lawmaker Calls for Judicial Justice

China's top legislator Li Peng has urged to handle cases in accordance with the law to safeguard judicial justice.

Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), made the call here today at the first plenary meeting of the NPC Standing Committee team to inspect the implementation of the Criminal Procedural Law.

He urged the team members to be aware of the importance of the inspection and to press public security and judicial departments to improve their supervision so as to ensure judicial justice.

The Criminal Procedural Law was enacted in 1979 and revised in an all-about manner in 1996, according to the NPC leader.

He praised police and judicial departments for their enormous efforts in implementing the revised procedural law, but noted that there still exist problems such extended detention, torture, and restriction of lawyers to carry out their duties.

Cao Zhi, a vice chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, and head of the inspection team, presided over today's meeting.
