Top Leaders Hail Chinese Culture Show

Chinese President Jiang Zemin has sent a message of congratulations to the "Experience Chinese Culture in the United States, 2000," a cultural extravaganza scheduled to kick off at the night of August 24 with a concert of traditional Chinese music held in New York at the headquarters of the United Nations.

The cultural exchange program, Jiang said, will open a window to Chinese culture for the American people.

Jiang said he hoped the program will play a positive role in promoting cultural exchanges between China and the United States.

US President Bill Clinton has also sent a message of goodwill to the upcoming cultural event, the largest ever sent to the United States by the Chinese Government.

On behalf of the United Nations, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan praised the coming performance by the Chinese musicians at the UN headquarters.

The large-scale cultural event, sponsored by the State Information Office under China's State Council, the Ministry of Culture and several other organizations, will feature a concert of traditional Chinese music, a photo exhibition, a fashion show and an arts and crafts display, and will run until September 17.
