Japanese FM Leaves for Beijing

Japanese Foreign Minister Yohei Kono left Tokyo on Monday for Beijing for talks with Chinese leaders on bilateral ties.

During his four-day stay in Beijing, Kono is expected to meet with Chinese President Jiang Zemin, Premier Zhu Rongji, Vice Premier Qian Qichen, Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan and head of the Chinese Communist Party's Organizational Department Zeng Qinghong.

Kono is expected to exchange views with the Chinese leaders on preparations for Zhu's planned visit to Japan in October and other bilateral issues of common concern.

The Japanese foreign minister is also scheduled to make a speech in Beijing on the future of Japan-China relations.

Kono is scheduled to return to Japan on Thursday evening.
