Four Hi-Tech Industries Rise in Tianjin

Tianjin , the old industrial city of China, has had four rising industries, i.e., electronic information, new energy and materials, biological technology and modern medicine and environmental protection, set up as it is marching toward the new century.

Statistics provided by the office in charge of the implementation of the development plan for Tianjin Hi-Tech Industrialization show that in the first half of this year, the output value of the city's hi-tech industry made up nearly one-fourth of its gross industrial output value, with the growth rate being 15 percent higher than the average industrial growth rate. The production value registered by the four rising industries accounted for 80 percent of the total output value of the city's hi-tech industry.

Foreign investment directly improves the scale and level of the four hi-tech industries. So far, foreign investment in the four fledgling industries has exceeded US$ 10 billion. The proportion of the output value of foreign-invested hi-tech industries to the gross output value of all hi-tech industries increased from 50 percent two years ago to the present 80 percent.

An official with the above-said office said that electronic information, new energy and materials, biological technology and modern medicine and environmental protection will be the focuses of Tianjin's future development. By the year 2005, the output value of hi-tech industry will have accounted for over one-third of the gross industrial production value.

With regard to the traditional industry which is still leading Tianjin's economy, the city has worked out a three-year plan for upgrading the traditional industry by high technology. In the coming three years, Tianjin will transform traditional processing industry and raw material industry with electronic information technology, biological technology, new materials, new energy and environmental protection technology.
