Li Peng Arrives in Riga for Visit to Latvia
Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC), arrived Riga Saturday for a three-day official visit to Latvia.

In a written speech delivered at Riga International Airport upon his arrival, Li said although China and Latvia are located far apart geographically, the people of the two countries have always harbored friendly feelings towards each other.

Since the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries in 1991, the cooperation between China and Latvia in the fields of politics, economy, culture, education and other areas have been developing smoothly, and mutual understanding and trust have been expanding, he said.

Li stressed that China attaches great importance to developing friendly relations with Latvia and supports Latvia's efforts for maintaining national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.

During his current visit, Li said he is going to have in-depth discussions with Latvian leaders on bilateral ties and international and regional issues of common concern.

He expressed his belief that with the joint efforts from both countries, the Sino-Lativian friendship and cooperation, which are based on the five principles of peaceful coexistence, will surely be expanded in a comprehensive and healthy manner.

Li came to Riga after his three-day official visit to Estonia, where he had wide-ranging talks with Estonian leaders on bilateral relations and world and regional affairs of common interest.
