Travel Together With the Olympics
Today, the valiant and heroic Chinese Sports Delegation is stepping on the long journey to the 27th Olympic Games. At the turn of the millenium, China, as a member of the world sports big family, is gathering in Sydney, the Chinese show more concern for the current Olympic Games.
Failure and contention, setback and rise, tear and laugh-these are the meanings of joining in the Olympic Games. On their road of traveling together with the Olympics, the 1.2 billion Chinese people's persistent pursuit of the Olympic spirit and the passion they pour into the Olympic Games will once again be shown in the Homebush Bay of Sydney in the Southern Hemisphere.
What force has pulled us together with the Olympics for the same cause? What strength has made us unswerving in our resolve to pursue the Olympic spirit?
An ancient civilized country, which is brimming with vigor and vitality in the reform and opening up drive, once becoming really involved in the Olympic Games, will have a more thorough and profound understanding of the "quicker, higher and stronger" Olympic spirit, of the view that "participation is more important than winning" and of "peace, friendship and progress"; a nation, which has gone through a great deal of hardship and is working hard to make progress, once joining in the big family of the Olympics, will fear no difficulty, go all out and be bound to take up its sacred responsibility to inject fresh vigor into the Olympic Games and make new contributions.
At the Los Angeles Olympics, Xu Haifeng's clear and melodious gunshots enabled China to achieve a "zero breakthrough" in winning the Olympic gold medal; at the Seoul Olympics, the Games ended with only five golds going to China made us clearly realize our lagging and shortcoming; at the Barcelona Olympics, the breakthrough made in winning 16 golds for the first time pushed us to a new starting point; at the Atlanta Olympics, our master athletes again brought back 16 heavy golds, resulted in the establishment of the leading position of China as the second group on the Olympic playground, this time when going on an expedition to the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the Chinese Olympic sports delegation set the target of "winning no less than 16 golds". It should be said that in the capricious arena and on the Olympic stage where many top-notch athletes of the sporting world are contending for the champion, such a target set by the Chinese Sports Delegation requires confidence and courage. As the saying goes, "When the seas are in turmoil, heroes are in their mettle," it is difficulty that can fully demonstrate Chinese athletes' spirit of pressing ahead in defiance of difficulties, and their mental outlook of optimistically making progress; it is difficulty that can give expressions to Chinese good athletes' features of pursuing the "quicker, higher and stronger" Olympic spirit. Chinese master athletes who are shouldering a glorious mission, do all you can in the combat at the Sydney Olympics! Please remember the 1.2 billion people of the motherland always provide you with a powerful backing.
In February this year, Beijing once again submitted an application to the IOC for hosting the 2008 Olympic Games. On August 28, Beijing became one of the five candidates for hosting the said event. At present, various items of related work are under way in perfect order, the Chinese people's application enthusiasm is rising, Beijing's application work is receiving increasing support from personages at home and abroad. Beijing has become newer and more beautiful. With a broad mind, soaring passion and energy, the Chinese people are pursuing their own Olympic ideals and making their contributions.
