Chinese FM Spokesman on UN Millennium Summit

China is convinced that the United Nations, the most popular inter-government international organization, will certainly play an even more important role in international affairs, the Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.

Commenting on the just-concluded UN Millennium Summit at a press conference, ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi said "We hope that through joint efforts of all member states of the UN, positive results yielded in the summit would be implemented."

He said during the summit, world leaders, focusing on such topics as peace and development, and had wide-ranging and in-depth discussions on establishing a new international political and economic order of fairness and justice and strengthening the role the United Nations. A declaration was passed at the summit, which also outlined the development direction of the UN.

"All these have very important and far-reaching impact," he said.
