Full-scale R&D Resources Checkup Kicked Off

Approved by the State Council, and as the biggest-ever of its kind, a nationwide checkup on Research and Development (R&D) resources has lately been launched in China.

This is designed to further implement the strategy for revitalizing the Chinese nation through science and education and provide reliable data for formulating related policies in mapping out its 10th Five-year Plan.

Departments concerned at all levels should pay close attention to the work and fully understand the importance of sci-tech statistics for practicing macro-control and formulation of policies. They are required to cooperate with each other, make careful arrangements to complete the task successfully and timely, according to documents jointly issued by the Ministry of Science and Technology, State Statistics Bureau, Ministry of Finance, State Economic and Trade Commission and other related administrative departments.

The share of R&D and its expenditure in GDP is an international standard measuring a nation's activity and investment scale in the realm of science and technology. To map out a long-term development strategy and build a national innovation system, it is imperative for a complete understanding of the country's R&D situation and its international status in this regard.

The survey will reportedly be conducted by three phases: preparations, formal checkup and data turning over and examination. Countrywide preparatory work is to begin soon and formal work is scheduled January to May coming year. The first batch of survey results will be published next September.
