Chinese, Colombian Defense Ministers Hold Talks

Chinese Defense Minister Chi Haotian held talks with his Colombian counterpart Luis Fernando Ramirez Acuna Monday in Beijing.

Chi, also a vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission and a state councilor, said Sino-Colombian relations have enjoyed a smooth development since the two countries forged diplomatic ties in 1980, and the two sides have cooperated more in political, economic and cultural fields. He voiced his hope that this relationship would continue to develop in all fields.

Chi briefed the guests on China's current human rights situation. He said the Chinese government values human rights and has made unremitting efforts to improve and protect the human rights of the Chinese people. He said the current people's human rights in China is better than any time in history.

He said China has valued the role of Colombian government in international human rights area, adding that China opposes any action of antagonism by some countries in the area of human rights in China.

Facts show that what those countries did is unfruitful, and is doomed to failure, he added.

Chi also expounded on the Chinese government's stance on the Taiwan issue, and expressed his gratitude for the Colombian government's support of the one-China policy.

Ramirez reaffirmed the Colombian government's stance in this regard, and vowed to improve friendly relations between the two armed forces and countries.

Prior to the talks, Chi held a welcome ceremony for the Colombian guests.
