Xinjiang to Develop a Group of Key Industries

Zhou Shengtao, deputy secretary of the Party committee of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, recently indicated that Xinjiang will focus on the development and construction of a group of key industries in the coming five years and welcome investors from inside and outside China to join in the development by different forms.

As a major region in the development of west China, Xinjiang is quite abundant in exploitable resources and has great potential for developing the feature economy and forming new economic growth points.

Xinjiang's vigorous development of feature agriculture aims to establish the biggest high-quality cotton export base, modern forest and fruits base and animal husbandry base. In the coming five years, Xinjiang will mainly develop processing industry bases for special products such as fragrant pears, Hami melon, grape, the fruit of Chinese wolfberry, pomegranate, tomato, red flower, red dates, barley and flax.

Xinjiang, also rich in underground resources, plans to construct China's biggest petroleum and natural gas industrial base and an important petrochemical industrial base in west China in the coming five years. Meanwhile, it will finish constructing a textile production base, a nonferrous metals industrial base and other industrial bases.

Infrastructure construction, focused on transportation and water conservancy, will also be a key local industry requiring major input in the next five years. The Xinjiang government plans to invest 70 billion yuan in infrastructure construction, 23 billion yuan of which will be directed into highway construction and renovation. Besides, it will speed up the construction of China-Kirghizia-Uzbekistan.html target=_blank>Uzbekistan Railway, improve the functions of Urumqi and Kashi airports, and quicken the construction of communication information network.

The 10-odd water conservancy projects including the comprehensive harnessing project of the ecological environment of the Tarim River, which are started at the same time, will enable Xinjiang to organize and implement a group of projects of coal power, hydroelectric power, natural gas generated power and wind power, thereby forming a great power grid in Xinjiang, centered in Urumqi.

Zhou Shengtao said that while quickening economic development, Xinjiang will pay more attention to the ecological environmental construction and attach equal importance to environmental protection and pollution control.

The government of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region will give priority to the development of tourism, with emphasis on the development and construction of five tourist areas.
