China to Further Globalize in the New Century: Vice Premier
With China's pending entry into WTO and the gradual development of the western areas, the country is bound to open wider to the outside world in the new century, said Vice Premier Qian Qichen in Beijing Friday.
He made the remark at a national day reception, sponsored by the State Council's Office of Overseas Chinese Affairs and the Taiwan Affairs Office at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
Top Chinese leaders, including National People's Congress Standing Committee Chairman Li Peng, Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference National Committee Chairman Li Ruihuan and Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao, attended the reception at the eve of the 51st anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.
Qian conveyed his greetings and wishes to compatriots in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, as well as to overseas Chinese worldwide.
He said that the Chinese economy has made huge progress since the beginning of the year. The country has got through the difficulties of the Asian financial crisis.
The Vice Premier vowed that the Chinese central government will spare no effort to ensure sustained and long-term stability and prosperity in both Hong Kong and Macao, and is willing to have dialogue with Taiwan authorities on any issue provided the One-China principle is adhered to.
