Hong Kong Newspapers Highlight Tung's Policy Address

All the newspapers in Hong Kong Thursday gave wide coverage to the fourth policy address Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region made on Wednesday.

Ta Kung Po devoted six pages to reporting Tung's policy address and comments.

In an editorial, the newspaper said Tung's address, entitled "Serving the Community, Sharing Common Goals," showed the basic characters and concepts of Tung's administration which are long-range and persistent. The address also represented an urgent appeal aimed at the current political and social environment, it added.

The newspaper said the address focused on Hong Kong citizens, especially those are facing economic problems, and on the ways to solve the problems.

Wen Wei Po said Tung's fourth policy address has won welcome and support from all circles of the society who consider the address as one that dealt with the right issues.

They pointed out that the perspectives of the Tung administration are correct and this shows the administration is heading for the right direction.

Also in an editorial, Hong Kong Commercial Daily said Tung's policy address of 2000 is accurate in identifying the chances and challenges Hong Kong faces. While sticking to the existing administrative ideas and strategies, the address put forth new innovative thoughts and the measures it spelled out to address the current problems are realistic and should be effective.

Hong Kong Economic Times said in an editorial that the address is different from the previous three in the fact that it focuses on the citizens of Hong Kong.

In an article entitled "The right direction," the English newspaper South China Morning Post said Tung's fourth policy address was "by far the shortest, but also the best."

"By focusing on his priorities and leaving the details to his policy secretaries, he sent a clear and sharp message in his speech, " said the newspaper.
