OIC to Hold Emergency Meeting on Palestine

Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) Azzeddine Laraki announced here Saturday that foreign ministers of the 56-member OIC is to hold an emergency meeting on the Palestinian crisis.

At this sensitive juncture, the OIC secretariat is ready to hold an emergency meeting of the foreign ministers of member countries to draw up strategies in support of the Palestinian nation, Laraki said in a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi.

The OIC chief, however, did not give a specific date for the emergency meeting, which was proposed earlier by Iranian President Mohammad Khatami, the current chairman of the organization.

The announcement came as an emergency summit meeting of the Arab League is currently going on in Cairo, which is also aimed to condemn Israeli "atrocities" and rally support for Palestinians.

Three weeks of bloody clashes in West Bank and Gaza so far have left some 110 Palestinians dead and thousands more wounded.

Laraki, who arrived here Friday, said would hold talks with Iranian officials and arrange the preliminaries for the OIC foreign ministerial meeting, Iran's official Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) news agency reported.
