Western Development Program Complementary to Development in HK, Macao

A senior Chinese official in charge of Hong Kong and Macao affairs outlined seven aspects in China's development of its western areas that are complementary to the development of Hong Kong and Macao, at the on-going Western Forum of China.

Hong Kong enjoys the advantage of ample funds and multi-investment channels, which can be used for raising funds and providing other financial services for western China, said Chen Zuo'er, deputy head of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, at the forum being held in Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province.

Hong Kong has a well-organized economic and trade network around the globe, an ideal investment environment and well-equipped service installations. Provinces in western China should take advantage of Hong Kong's trade network to expand economic cooperation with neighboring countries.

Western China needs a great amount of investment to build more infrastructure projects, offering a good opportunity for investors from Hong Kong and Macao.

Western areas are endowed with rich tourism resources, while firms in Hong Kong and Macao have rich experience in tourism and hotel management. The two sides should combine their efforts to build travel agencies and organize tours.

Hong Kong has a large contingent of experts in the fields of shipping, commerce, law and accounting. China's western areas should introduce professionals from Hong Kong to improve services in these fields.

The two sides should fully utilize their strong points in the development of science and technology and in traditional Chinese medicine production.

Western China should make use of the advantages of Hong Kong and Macao in training professionals in economic management and service trades.

Businessmen from 77 enterprises from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan have vowed to take an active part in China's nationwide campaign of speeding up development of western China.
