Chinese and Azerbaijan Foreign Ministers Hold Talks

Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan said Tuesday that China is willing to further expand its cooperation with Azerbaijan.

Tang, in talks with his Azerbaijan counterpart Vilayat Guliyev, said that bilateral ties have been progressing well since the two countries forged diplomatic relations.

The cooperation between the two sides in various areas has been fruitful, Tang said.

He noted that China supports Azerbaijan's efforts to safeguard its territorial integrity and supports the efforts by the international community to peacefully resolve the conflict over the Nagorno-Karabakh area.

Tang thanked Azerbaijan for supporting China on the Taiwan and Tibet issues.

He said that he believes that bilateral relations, based on equality, mutual trust, friendship, and mutual benefit, will rise to a new level in the new century.

Guliyev noted that relations between his country and China have made great progress, saying that the high-level visits between the two sides in recent years have laid a solid foundation for furthering bilateral relations.

He said that Azerbaijan and China share views on many major issues. Guliyev pledged that his country will resolutely support China's principled position on the Taiwan issue and China's unremitting efforts in safeguarding its national unity, in opposing national separatism and terrorism.

Guliyev said that he believes the friendship between the two peoples will be further consolidated.

After the talks, the two foreign ministers signed a protocol of economic cooperation between the two countries.

Guliyev arrived in Beijing today for an official visit to China at the invitation of Tang.
