ICBC Initiates Financial Business Via Internet

Clients of Shanghai Branch of Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) can now conduct financial business via Internet.

By browsing website: www.my95588.com, people can handle their savings, open accounts, trade in foreign exchange or do other banking and financial business. The on-line service became available Wednesday.

"They don't have to consider the working hours of banks, or have to spend time between the office, home and banks several times per month," said Ji Xiaohui, president of the ICBC Shanghai Branch.

The opening of Internet business of ICBC, China's largest commercial bank, indicates the start of the country's nationwide on-line finance system.

So far, a number of commercial banks have had telephone banking or Internet banking for clients since last September.

Last August, the branch started a telephone banking service where clients can conduct financial business easily by using a telephone.

To date, telephone banking has more than 400,000 registered clients and has reached a total trade volume of 25 billion yuan.

"After China enters WTO, Internet banking will have a big market and prosperous development in the country," Ji said.
