Tanzanian President Reiterates Support for One China Policy

Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa Wednesday reiterated his country's support for the One China policy, saying that he believes China has the ability to solve the Taiwan issue and realize its reunification.

Meeting with a visiting Chinese military delegation led by General Li Jinai, Mkapa, also commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, said Tanzania has been following the development in China with great interest, adding that he and Chinese leaders all agree to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in the new century.

Mkapa also thanked China for offering Tanzania lots of "unselfish assistance" in various fields including military cooperation and making important contributions to Tanzania's economic development and the revolutionary movement in southern Africa.

General Li, who is commissar of General Department of Military Equipment of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, conveyed to President Mkapa a message of greetings and goodwill from Chinese President Jiang Zemin, who thanked Tanzania for its consistent support to China over Taiwan and human right issues.

Prior to the meeting, the delegation held talks with senior officials from Tanzania People's Defense Forces and the Ministry of Defense and National Services and visited Tanzania's naval base.

The Chinese military delegation arrived here on Tuesday for a four-day official visit to Tanzania and will leave for Zambia on Friday.
