Australian Govt Reports Gunfire in Fiji Capital

The Australian Foreign Affairs Department said Thursday that the Australian High Commission in Fiji had reported gunfire in Fiji's capital Suva.

The commission reported increasing firepower being used by a group of rebellious special forces soldiers who launched an armed attack on the Queen Elizabeth Barracks at nearby Nabua, the department's spokesman said.

"Later on, it sounded as though they were possibly using rocket launchers and mortars," the spokesman said.

"But that has yet to be confirmed," he said.
