Gore Calls for Complete Count of Florida Votes
US Vice President Al Gore on November 27 called for a "complete count" of presidential ballots cast in Florida, saying that he's pursuing legal challenges in order to assure greatest credibility for the outcome.
"Whatever the outcome, let the people have their say, and let us listen," Gore said in a national televised speech.
He said he has decided to contest what he called an "inaccurate and incomplete" vote count in Florida, a make-or-break state which decides the winner of the presidential election held on November 7.
Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris on Sunday declared Gore's Republican rival George W. Bush winner in the state. According to official returns, Bush led Gore by 537 votes in the state.
Bush Moves Ahead with Transition Plan
US Republican presidential candidate George W. Bush moved ahead with his transition plan for forming a government on November 27 after Florida officials certified that he had won the state's presidential election.
Bush met with Andrew Card, who was named White House chief of staff by Bush, and discussed the transition business in Austin, Texas.
Card, a former secretary of transportation, said the Bush team may open its own transition office in Washington after the General Accounting Office in Washington refused to open a transition office or release US$5.3 million for Bush's team until the contest is settled.
