Containers Handling Surpass Five Million at Shanghai Port

Container Handling at Shanghai Port Reaches Into 5 Miliion This Year
This year sees container handling overtake five million standard containers at Shanghai Port. With its shipping volume to top 1000 freighters, Shanghai is the first in China's mainland, which has seen its container capacity break through five million.

Shanghai has witnessed a year-to-year rise in the handling of global container capacity. In 1999, the city saw its container capacity reach 4.216 million standard containers, thus realizing the yearly rise of one million containers, a breakthrough ever achieved in history, which placed Shanghai at the seventh in the container handling of the world.

Up to now, container handling at Shanghai port has come to 23.3% of the country's total with an annual increase close to 30 percent. So far, there are 16 container shipping-lines with 1000 ships sailing monthly to 12 major seaports in Europe, America, Africa, the Mediterranean and Northeast Asia, and the average turnaround time at Shanghai port has decreased to 18 hours from 29 hours in 1993, a reduction of 34 percent.

While stepping up its efforts in tapping the international business, Shanghai has been going in for the container transport for internal trade. Up to now, a water system running from north to south for internal trade has by and large come into being at 28 piers, thereby making it a hinge for container transport in the internal trade.
