Eight Confirmed Dead in Building Collapse
The death toll in the collapse of a three-story building under construction in Guangdong Province increased to eight the from previously reported seven, police said Saturday, December 2.

The 28 people injured are receiving treatment in a local hospital and doctors said the injuries are not life threatening.

The building, which was under construction in Chiling Village, Houjie Town of Dongguan City, collapsed around 2:30 pm Friday.

Covering an area of 600 square meters, the house was constructed in 1992 as a single-story temporary building and was rented to a man as a shop.

The man began a project to add two stories in September this year. The building collapsed when the third floor was being built.

Primary investigation indicated that the construction had not been approved by the local construction administrative department, and both the designer and contractor of the project do not have licenses for the job.

So far, the head of Chiling Village, the owner of the shop, the designer and contractor have all been detained by police.
