32 Killed, 120 Injured in Indian Train Accident

At least 32 persons were killed and over 120 injured when the Amritsar-bound Howrah Mail rammed into wagons of a derailed goods train near Punjab in north India early December 2, railway officials said.

Twenty-two passengers of the Mail train died on the spot while three succumbed to injuries on their way to a hospital at Patiala, they said.

The toll in the accident, which took place between Sarai Banjara and Sadhu Garh railway stations around six a.m., was likely to go up as some persons were still trapped inside three of the five derailed coaches of the Mail train.

Of the injured, 72 were admitted to the district hospital at Fatehgarh Sahib, while 33 were rushed to a hospital at Rajpura, according to the Press Trust of India.

Several long distance and short distance trains have been suspended, curtailed or diverted due to the accident.
