Taiwanese Merchants See Bright Future of Mainland

The result of a questionnaire published on December 2 shows that over 80 percent of the Taiwanese merchants interviewed predicted a more open economy of the mainland and 62 percent thought the mainland would maintain the present situation or become more stable. Besides, the interviewee generally foresaw that a prosperous situation would prevail in China's mainland next year.

On the mainland policies of actively promoting economic restructuring, revitalizing the nation through science and education, deepening reform of the economic system and further opening, 84 percent of the interviewee thought the mainland's economic reform is irreversible and it will become more open in the future; 62 percent of them maintained that the mainland's society will become more stable or maintain the present situation; 55 percent held an optimistic view about the mainland's financial reform; 71 percent of them forecasted a booming economy of the mainland. Regarding the influence of China's entry into the WTO on the Taiwanese merchants' market sales in the mainland, more than 40 percent thought it to be advantageous, 30 percent thought it to be no influence and only about 10 percent thought it disadvantageous.
