China Boosts Road Construction

The impoverished western area of China is driving to develop its infrastructure facilities under the "west development" background, such highway construction.

According to the latest statistics released by the Ministry of Communications in Changsha, the highway construction in western China has seen rapid increase this year. Investment from January to October rose by 17 percent from the same period of last year. The developing area has completed investment ahead of schedule.

The statistics said total investment in China's highway construction from January to October was 172.6 billion yuan, accounting for 96 percent of the annual investment plan. It is expected the 220 billion yuan worth of investment will be completed within the year. Eastern, Middle and western areas all reported different degrees of increase in investment.

China plans to increase about 50000 kilometers of roads this year, of which new expressway will be 4561 kilometers, new first class highway will be 1963 kilometers, and new second class highway will be 8279 kilometers.

Meanwhile, the total length of roads will exceed 1.4 million kilometers, of which expressway will exceed 16000 kilometers, which ranked the third in the world. (Panorama)
