Shanghai IP Wide-Bandwidth CAN Established

China Netcom Corporation Ltd. announced Tuesday that its Shanghai city area network (CAN) of IP wide-bandwidth was established, with an investment of 410 million yuan (US$49.4 million).

Shanghai IP wide-bandwidth CAN adopted the advanced optic fiber telecommunication technology. The network, with stem network bandwidth of 40G bps, is able to transmit and receive 15,000 to 16, 000 VCD films at one time, or download 16 encyclopedias of 74 volumes at the same time.

China Netcom was established in August 1999, with investors of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the State Administration of Radio, Films and Television, the Ministry of Railways, and the Shanghai municipal government.
